MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least five civilians have been injured in airstrikes suspected to have been carried out by Kenya warplanes in Southern Somalia.
The airborne attack took place in El-Adde village of Gedo region which is close to the Somalia-Kenya border.
‘’Planes have pounded El-Adde village indiscriminately where civilians are living. Five people were seriously injured,’’ one of the residents told the media.
In the past, Kenyan warplanes killed dozens of civilians in Southern Somalia in airborne attacks aimed at eliminating Al-Shabaab fighters.
In 2016, heavily armed fighters from the Al-Shabaab group launched an attack on a military base run by Kenyan troops in the village of El-Adde in the region where they killed over 100 Kenyan soldiers.
Kenya formally sent 4,660 soldiers to Somalia in October 2011 after incessant attacks and kidnappings of civilians by the militants within its territory.
A year later, the UN Security Council gave Kenya the green light to join AMISOM, a decision that meant the treasury would not bear the full costs of the incursion.
Currently, 22,000-strong African Union troops in Somalia are helping the government of Horn of the African nation to defeat Al-Shabab fighters.
