GALKAYO (Halbeeg News) – Police in Galkayo town of the semi-autonomous regional state of Puntland, Somalia have arrested five al-Shabaab suspects following a crackdown in town on Sunday evening.
The arrests bring to 15 the number of suspects nabbed since Mudug region governor, Feysal Sheikh Ali Jifo-jabsade directed the police to crack down on terrorist activities two days ago.
Jifo-jabsade ordered police to mount operations to flush out terrorist operatives and all sleeper-cells.
On Sunday, a joint operation at in some neighbourhoods of the town. netted five people who were suspected to have been working with al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda linked group.
Police are also conducting investigations to establish the sympathizers behind what authorities believe is sequence assassinations.
Puntland authorities have been accusing al-Shabaab of carrying deadly attacks and assassinations in the region for the past years.
