TORONTO (Halbeeg News) – First Somali origin Muslim Candian was elected member of the Canadian Parliament to represent Nova Scotia.
Ali Duale, a former firefighter garnered 40.2% of the 41st provincial vote.
Julie Melanson of the NDP received 34.2%, while Richard MacLean of the Progressive Conservative Party received 22.1%.
Duale who fled Somalia in 1991 after the country’s central government was toppled had been serving fire department for more than 17 years, according to Duale’s interview with BBC Somali service.
During the interview, he noted that the region was not populated by Somalis, but was able to be successful in the election because of his social work and in advocating for immigrants.
