A delegation led by World Bank Country director, Bella Bird has arrived in Mogadishu barely a day after Somalia-World Bank conference concluded in Nairobi.
Somali Minister for Finance, Abdirahman Duale Beileh and several other government officials has received Mrs. Bird and delegates at Adan Adde International Airport.
“Great to welcome back World Bank Country Director, Bella Bird to Somalia today. The Bank and the Somali government partner for stability and Progress,” Beileh posted on his Twitter account.
The delegation was escorted to the Headquarters of ministry for Finance in Mogadishu after landing at the airport.
Mr. Bird held discussions with Minister Beileh on wide range issues including the country’s stabilization process and the rebuilding of infrastructure.
The officials also focused on Somalia’s proposals to print new money for the country as Somali Shilling is going extinct.
“Returned from the SMP (Staff Monitoring Programme) meetings. Hopeful that our fiscal and economic reforms can take shape to achieve our goals. Strong institutions and continued focus on key priorities is important. Grateful for support from Somali people,” said Beileh.
Minister Beileh had discussions with the officials from international financial institutions since last week.
The sides deeply discussed Somalia’s proposed currency printing which the country wants to be materialized within this year.
On Sunday, the minister said Somalia concluded Staff Monitoring Programme (SMP) with the International Finance Institution.
In the first quarter of this year, the Somali government confirmed collecting $42.5 million in domestic revenue, the highest in a single quarter in recent history.
In February this year, the government introduced a new 5 percent sales tax on businesses to further boost income.
