At least five people have been killed and several others sustained injuries when Improvised Explosive Device (IED) concealed in Stadium went off in Barawe town about 210km southwest of Somali capital.
The explosion occurred shortly after 4pm when dozens of soccer funs and officials gathered to watch the final match between Elman and SYL teams.
Hirsi Barre Jeeh, Barawe district commissioner who confirmed the blast said the explosives were planted in VIP section of the Stadium.
He confirmed the deaths of five fans saying the players and the officials had narrowly escaped without hurt.
“So far, we can confirm the death five fans and injuries of eight others but the death toll can rise as some of the People are in critical conditions,” Jeeh said.
No group has yet claimed the responsibility of the attack.
Barawe which was once Al-Shabab stronghold is designated as the capital administrative of Southwest state.
Somali forces backed by AMISOM troops had captured the town after engaging fierce fighting with Al-Shabab fighters.
