DHUSAMAREB (Halbeeg News) – The former chief of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), Gen. Abdullahi Mohamud Gafow has won the election of the parliamentary seat held in Dhusamareb town of central Somalia.
Reports say Gafow’s opponent pulled out from the race before the election of the seat kicked off, effectively clearing the way for Mr. Gafow to become the next MP.
The unprecedented move following the withdrawal of the challenger, Hirey Muhuyidin who previously registered with the poll agency to contest for the seat.
Despite Gafow being the only contender for the seat, Somali electoral body proceeded to hold the election which participated 50 electoral delegates.
The chairlady of Somalia’s National Independent Electoral Commission, Yakima Ibrahim Ismail declared the results of the election saying Mr. Gafow, the lone contender won the election by securing 43 votes where Mr. Muhuyidin (who was not participating the election) got seven votes out of 50.
The winner of today’s election is the brother of Abdikadir Mohamud who vacated this post after submitting his resignation letter to the poll agency last month, a move critics termed a chance to pave his brother the way to the parliament.
Last year, Widespread corruption and election rigging were reported to have marred the electoral process of the parliamentary seat won by Mr. Mohamud in late 2016 after Mr. Gafow who was then NISA chief was said to have interfered with the process in order to secure the seat for his brother
