MOGADISHU ( Halbeeg News)- The European Union will finance the second face of the Mogadishu stadium with a donation of USD 3 million.
Minister for Youth and Sports, Khadija Mohamed Diriye confirmed during the launch of the second phase of renovation on Sunday.
The minister said with funding from the European Union the government will kick off the next crucial stage.
“We are starting the second stage of renovating the Mogadishu village sports,” Minister Khadija said.
She called upon business leaders and well-wishers to play their part in promoting sports activities in the country to create opportunities for the young generation.
The first part of the 60 thousand capacity stadia that involved general cleaning concluded intending to upgrade all sectors of the biggest sports facility in Somalia.
The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) officially handed-over Mogadishu’s main stadium to Somali authorities on August last year for upgrading.
The stadium was used as a military base since Sept 2011 when al-Shabaab was pushed out from the capital.
Mogadishu sports village is expected to host historic interstate annual football tournament slated towards the end of the year.
