MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News)-European Union (EU) has renovated two schools in Mogadishu which were damaged in an al-Shabaab attack in last September.
According to a statement by the bloc, 930 children from the schools have resumed their education after it was reopened this month.
Hassan Qariindi and Hawlwadaag collapsed after the bomb blast which left half a dozen children injured.
The statement states that the EU Charge Affairs, Mr. Fulgencio Garrido Ruiz, graced the official reopening ceremony along with the Federal Minister of Education, Culture and Higher Education Mr. Abdullahi Godah as well representatives from the Banadir administration, implementing partners and the local community.
Speaking at the event, the Federal Minister of Education, Culture and Higher Education Mr. Abdullahi Godah said Somali government would stick on improving the safety of children and their schools.
“Ensuring the safety and resilience of children and their access to sustained quality education remains a cornerstone of the Ministry of Education,” he said.
On his part, Mr. Fulgencio Garrido Ruiz, the EU Charge D’Affairs to Somalia said EU is committed to rebuilding Somalia’s education sector.
“Every child has the right to an education without fear of violence or attack. The European Union commits to continue engaging stakeholders in Somalia as partners in the search for solutions to the challenges facing education sector in Somalia,” said Ruiz.
