Mogadishu (Halbeeg News) – The EU has condemned the attack by al-Shabaab on a base of African Union forces in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region.
Heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters stormed a military base manned by Atmis forces in Bulo Marer town lies about 120 kilometres (75 miles) southwest of the capital Mogadishu.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for Friday’s attack via its communication channels, claiming it had overrun the base. The group claimed to have killed 137 soldiers at the base.
“This latest attack against soldiers conducting peace support operations in Somalia only reinforces our commitment to stand with the region and to hold to account those responsible for these continuously heinous assaults against Somali citizens and those seeking to stabilize the situation in the country,” Nabila Massrali, the spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy, said in a statement.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and military comrades of those affected,” Massrali added.
Al-Shabaab has since 2006 has been fighting to topple Somali government and establish its own administration.
