Plans are underway to swear in Ethiopia’s newly elected Prime Minister, Abiye Ahmed on April 02 making him the first Mulism PM to lead the country for the last one century.
In a statement Ethiopian Parliament announced that the new leader will take oath on Monday after he was successfully elected by the members of the Parliament.
The swearing in ceremony was initially scheduled to take place on Saturday but the statement said the time was extended without giving further explanation for postponement.
“The House of the People’s Representatives will hold an extraordinary session on April 2 to swear in Dr. Abiye Ahmed,” reads the statement in part.
Ahmed who is a retired lieutenant general will succeed Hailemariam Desalegn who left the office after mass protests across the nation.
The new leader, 42, who is from Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group Oromo will face several challenges including Oromo’s dissatisfaction with government, unemployment, marginalized groups among others.
Ethiopia’s Oromo and Ahmara people have been in protests and calling for inclusive government since 2015.
The protests have crippled the country’s growing economy leading the government to respond with swift harsh operations that claimed lives of the thousands of unarmed civilians, Majority from Oromo community.
Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front ( EPRDF) has been ruling Ethiopia since 1991 when the government led by Mengistu Haile Mariam was deposed.
