Ethiopia People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front ( EPRDF) has finally announced the date for its Executive Committee meeting after several postponement of the meeting.
In a statement by the head of EPRDF Council, Ato Shiferaw Shigute, the country’s governing coalition said the executive committee and council have been scheduled to meet late this week.
” The meetings of EPDRF Executive Committee and the council will kick off on Sunday ( 11th march 2018). The officials will get prepare on Saturday,” reads the statement.
According to the statement, the agendas of the meeting include assessing the progress of the party, means to reform and among other.
The meeting of the 180- member body is probably expected to culminate in the appointment of the country’s new prime minister.
The 180-member EPDRF council made up of 45 dignitaries from each of the parties of the coalition.
There had been speculations that the new chairperson of EPDRF who will also be the new prime minister is expected to be an individual from Oromo People’s Democratic Organisation ( OPDO) which is affiliate of the EPDRF, the ruling party.
OPDO is expected to submit former Science and Technology minister, Abiy Ahmed as its candidate for the top office of the country.
Ahmed will be the first Muslim leader to hold the post of this landlocked country which dominated largest Christian population in East Africa.
Desalegn who was leading the country since the death of his predecessor, Meles Zenawi had stepped down from the office mid February after the Oromo, Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group spearheaded the anti-government protests
