MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has today lauded the newly signed trade between Somalia and Ethiopia.
In a twitter post by Villa Somalia, the president welcomed the move saying traders from both countries would have chance utilize the potential investment opportunities.
“H.E @M_Farmaajo congratulates Somali entrepreneurs for their efforts in uplifting the economy & boosting regional trade after the 1st shipment of fish to #Ethiopia at Aden Adde Int’l Airport. Fisheries & Transport Ministers Hon Abdullahi Bidhaan, & Hon. Durran Ahmed were present,” the post reads in part.
The remarks of the president come a day after Somalia and Ethiopia signed an agreement to swap Fish for khat.
The signing ceremony which took place at held at Aden Adde International Airport in was attended by
Somali Minister of Fisheries and his Civil Aviation counterpart Abdullahi Warsame and Duran Ahmed Farah respectively.
The first consignment of 5,000 tonnes of fish was dispatched to Ethiopia.
Ethiopia will import khat to Somalia.
Somalia banned the product from Kenya last year to curb the spread of coronavirus and bargain with Kenya over trade based on win-win situation.
Somalia demanded Kenya to fulfil five conditions, for it to be allowed to send Khat cargo to Somalia.
Somalia asked Kenya to allow in goods from Somalia.
Kenya used to export up to 50 tonnes of khat valued at $2.5 million daily to Somalia prior to the ban.
