ADDIS-ABABA (Halbeeg News) – Seventy Al-Shabaab fighters have been killed and two vehicles were destroyed in an airstrike conducted by Ethiopian military.
The state-affiliate Fana Broadcasting Corporate reported that the bombardment was meant to foil an Al-Shabab attack on AMISOM Forward Operation (FOB) manned by Ethiopian troops operating under the framework of African Union.
“The airstrike was carried out to foil plans of the militant group to attack Ethiopian contingent of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM),” Fana reported, “About 70 al-Shabaab militants were killed and two vehicles packed with weapons were destroyed in the air strike.”
The report says “two vehicles packed with weapons” were destroyed. It does not say where or when the airstrike occurred.
It cites Brig. Gen. Yilma Merdassa with the air force as saying “we achieved 100 percent of our plans.”
It is not clear when and where the airstrike took place.
Ethiopia is the last troop contributing country to the Africa Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
An advance team of 100 uniformed personnel arrived in Somalia on the 1st of January 2014 while the other three battalion-strong contingents deployed soon after.
Ethiopian troops constitute AMISOM’s sixth contingent, after Burundian, Sierra Leoneans, Djiboutian, Kenyan, and Ugandan contingents.
