ADDIS ABABA ( HALBEEG NEWS) – Ethiopian Defence Minister Lemma Megerssa has been put under house arrest on Wednesday.
Mr. Megerssa and PM Abiy Ahmed Ali advisor on social affairs issues Teyiba Hassan and former Head of Oromia land use and admin Bureau Milkeessaa Miidhagaa were also removed from their seats at the House of Federation where they represented Oromia region.
According to security sources, the Ethiopian army chief told Mr. Mergesa that his services are no longer required and should stay in his house until further notice.
Prior to being appointed as a defense minister, he was the head of the country’s most populous state, Oromia.
The latest development comes after the Oromia wing of the ruling party held a two-day summit in the wake of ethnic and religious violence that claimed the lives of more than 170 people.
A spokesperson for the party accused Mr. Lemma of disregarding the party and his duties.
It’s not yet clear if Mr. Lemma will continue holding the position of defense minister.
