MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Ethiopian government on Sunday inked peace agreement with the leaders of Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) rebels in the capital city of Eritrea, Asmara.
Just a month after Ethiopia removed the group from its list of “terrorist” organization in July, ONLF which had been fighting against the Ethiopian regime since 199r has declared a unilateral ceasefire.
In a joint declaration seen by Halbeeg News, the representatives from both sides agreed to cease hostilities towards each other.
It also stipulates that “ONLF shall pursue its political objectives through peaceful means with the assurance that Ethiopia will respect and uphold the provisions of its constitution”.
The two sides agreed to establish a joint committee to further discuss the root causes of the conflict.

The group based itself in Ethiopia’s neighbouring Eritrea for decades and insisted its armed operations were to defend Somalis in Ethio-Somali region.
ONLF claimed reaposibilityFor several deadly since the beginning of 1994 aimed at Ethiopian forces in Somali areas.
The region the ONLF operates in contains four trillion cubic feet of gas and oil deposits.
In 2007, Ethiopian forces waged a large-scale offensive against them after the group attacked a Chinese-run oil facility, killing 74 people.
China’s GCL-Poly Petroleum Investments has been developing two gas fields since 2013.
