ADDIS ABABA (Halbeeg News) – The suspected ringleader of Saturday’s failed coup attempt in Ethiopia and the assassin of the country’s army chief died in different circumstances, the Ethiopian government said.
Brig-Gen Asaminew Tsige suspected to have orchestrated Military coup in Ethiopia’s Amhara region was killed on the outskirts of Amhara’s capital, Bahir Dar.
According to the state-owned media, the renegade commander was shot dead by police.
The state television did not provide further details on the security operations that led to the killing of Gen. Asaminew.
Brig-Gen Asaminew was Amhara’s regional security chief.
He was among a group of high-ranking military officers released from prison early last year when the previous government moved to free political detainees in response to public pressure.
The general had been in custody for nine years for allegedly plotting a coup.
In a separate incident, the federal police commissioner, Endeshaw Tasew, said that a soldier who is suspected of the killer of the late army chief, committed suicide.
Army chief General Seare and Maj-Gen Geazi were both shot and killed by the bodyguard of the former on Saturday, the government of Ethiopia said.
Earlier on the same day, Ambachew Mekonnen, President of Amhara regional state, and Azeze Wasse, the regional administration’s public organization advisor, were both shot dead during a security meeting at the office of the president, according to the government. Dr. Ambachew died in hospital from his injuries.
