ADDIS ABABA (Halbeeg News) – The Security Forces of Ethiopia have seized a huge cache of weapons following a weeklong security operation in parts of the country.
Ethiopia News Agency (ENA) has reported that the forces recovered seized 2,221 handguns and 71 Kalashnikov rifles in the north of the Amhara region.
According to the officials who spoke to ENA, the operations which started last Saturday has been targeting criminals suspected to have imported illegal weapons.
The report indicated that it was being smuggled inside an oil tanker truck that entered Ethiopia from Sudan.
Ethiopia strictly controls licensing and movement of arms across the country and private arms ownership is relatively rare in the East African country.
The Ethiopian government is preparing legislation that puts heavy prison terms on arms dealers, in a bid to stem the rising trade in illegal weapons in the East African country.
