JIGJIGA (Halbeeg News) – Authorities of Somali regional state in Ethiopia said their security forces foiled an infiltration attempt by suspected al-Shabaab group in Somalia.
In a statement, the region’s office of the communication noted that two suspected al-Shabaab operatives were nabbed by the forces following tips off by the public.
The operation against the suspects took place early this week, according to the statement.
“Two suspected al-Shabab operatives who tried to enter from neighboring Somalia to Ethiopia were intercepted in the Mustahil locality of Ethiopia Somali regional state,” said the statement.
During the operation, the forces reportedly killed one suspect and wounded another.
“One suspect was killed in a shootout, while the other suspect was injured and subsequently apprehended,” the statement said.
Al-Shabaab has been carrying attack in Somalia and other countries in the region including Kenyan and Uganda since 2016.
The group also targets Somali military and African Union mission in Somalia (Amisom) troops.
