ADDIS ABABA (Halbeeg News) – Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed named Ms. Aisha Mohammed as Ethiopia’s new defence minister Tuesday, making her the first woman to hold the post in Ethiopia
In his sweeping changes to the Horn of Africa nation’s government, Mr. Abiy appointed Ms. Aisha to the ministry responsible for overseeing the country’s vast borderline with Somalia, Kenya, Eritrea, Sudan, Djibouti, and South Sudan.
Hailing from Afar Regional State, Ms. Aisha previously served as head of Ethiopian Ministry for Culture and Tourism.
Meanwhile, 10 women are among the Cabinet ministers named by PM Abiy in his new appointments.
In the fresh appointments, the Head of Ethiopian government named Mrs. Mufuriat Kami as minister for peace, Mrs. Adanech Abeebe as minister for Revenue, Dagmawit Moges as minister for Transport and Yalem Tsegaye Asfaw as Minister for Women, Youth, and Children.
Other are: Ergoge Tesfaye, Minister for Labour & Social Affairs, Dr. Fitsum Assefa Minister for plan & development commission, Dr. Hirut Kassaw, Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Sports, Mrs. Fetlework Gebre-Egzihaber, Minister for Trade and Mrs. Hirut Woldemariam, minister Science and Higher Education.
The new line-up comes hours after Ethiopian Parliament unanimously approved a draft law prepared to restructure executive organs.
