JIGJIGA (Halbeeg News) – Thousands of Somalis across Somali regional state in Ethiopia and Somalia have gathered in Aysha town to commemorate hundreds of people killed by Ethiopian army for celebrating the independence of Somalia in 1960.
On 14 August 1960, the government led by Haile Selassie deployed hundreds of military soldiers in Aysha town to carry out killing against the unarmed civilians. Majority of those killed were from ethnic Issa Somalis.
The event was attended by the leader of Somali regional state, Mustafa Omer Mohamud, his deputy Adan Farah and among other leaders from the region.
Speaking at the event, President Mustafa said his government is committed to fighting the rights of Somali people and find ways to bring those behind the killing of Somali people before justice.
“We are today remembering those killed in this town mercilessly, they did nothing but to share the happiness with fellow Somalis in Somalia,” he said.
The leader pledged that his administration will implement development projects in the town.
Aysha which is in Ethiopia is located about 36km south of the border with Djibouti and 20km west of Somalia.
