The committee overseeing the election of the speaker has officially started the enrolment of the candidates who want to vie for the position in speaker.
The registration will run for two days, the 23rd and 24th of this month, before the candidates deliver their campaign speech at the Parlaiment, according to the statement released by the committee.
“The registration of the candidates will start on 23rd and will run till the 24th of April. The contenders should pay the nomination fee at an account at Central Bank,” reads the statement.
The statement said that the election will be held on 30th of this month 21 days after the former Speaker, Mohamed Osman Jawari resigned following a month-long political stand-off caused by no confidence against him by some members of the parliament.
It is yet unclear whether the committee will register the ministers vying for the post as the candidates insisted to contest for the speakership without resigning from their portfolios.
“Any candidate vying for the office of the speaker, who is also a member of the cabinet should hand over the resignation letters before the committee during the resignation,” said the committee in a statement.
According to the Article 59 of the Provisional Constitution of Somalia, the members of the executive can run for post with no effect on their respective ministry offices.
“A membership of the Federal Parliament can be lost as a result of the accepting to hold a government position other than a ministerial post,” articulates part C of article 59 of the Provisional Constitution.
