Garissa (Halbeeg News) – Traditional elders from the warring clans in Garissa have agreed to end the inter-clan clashes once and for all.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Commissioners from the NCIC will see both sides stop any further hostilities that include killings and any form of aggression.
The retaliatory attacks that have been going on for the last month have so far claimed the lives of 13 people among them six students who were shot dead aboard a Probox at Kunaso area on their way to the border town of Holugho.
One of the elders participated in the three-day conference, Abdi Mohamed, stated that they had determined to organise separate peace sessions with their individual tribes in order to restore normalcy.
“Going forward, we have decided we will all reach out to our respective communities, talk to them, and make sure that such a thing does not happen again. Above all will seek to root out all the bad elements who have been fanning these clashes in one way or the other,” he said.
Ahmed Kolon on his part said that they were focusing on finding a permanent solution to the perennial clashes.
“We don’t want to focus on bygones. Because that has already happened. Our focus as elders is to ensure that such a thing will never happen again. Among the things we have agreed is compensation to the families that lost their loved ones,” he said.
Abdullahi Aden described the talks as fruitful calling on the security apparatus and the other government agencies among them the NCIC to play their rightful role in averting such incidences from happening in future.
“As elders, we can only do much. The back however stops with the security apparatus who should look for these criminals who are out to cause clan animosity by killing innocent people. The guns that are also in the wrong are also a big concern and worry to us,” he said.
