MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The government of Egypt has applauded the United Nations Security Council’s vote on Saturday to lift the decades old arms embargo on Somalia.
United Nations imposed on the embargo on Somalia in 1992 after the horn of Africa nation plunged into deadly civilians.
“This resolution paves the way for the Somali government to continue its efforts in combating terrorism and achieving stability,” said the statement.
The foreign ministry said that Egypt reaffirms its steadfast support for the efforts of the Federal Government of Somalia to restore security and stability and enhance development in its sisterly country.
The United Nations Security Council imposed an arms embargo on Somalia in January 1992 in response to the ongoing conflict and proliferation of militant groups in the country.
In February 2007, the embargo was amended to permit arms supplies to Somali government forces.
The UN Security Council (UNSC) on Friday adopted two separate resolutions to renew the sanctions regime on Somalia-based al-Shabab and to lift the arms embargo on the Somali government, a crucial step forward in the country’s efforts to stabilize and strengthen its security forces.
Resolution 2713 decides to renew till Dec. 15, 2024, the sanctions regime on al-Shabab, including the authorization for maritime interdiction to enforce the embargo on illicit arms imports, the charcoal export ban, and the improvised explosive device components ban.
