Authorities in the semi-autonomous regional state of Puntland on Saturday declared that they would set plans to improve the economy of the state following the conclusion of Drought Relief and Recovery Efforts Conference in Garowe town.
Speaking at the conclusion of the conference, Puntland Minister of Planning, Shire Haji Farey said Puntland will address the causes of recurrent droughts and other challenges as thousands of people and their herds had been killed by the recurrent drought in Somalia.
“We need to improve our economy to avert the effect of droughts that hit Puntland every year. The administration will implement measures to increase productivity of the state,” said Farey.
He noted that drought effects would be reduced with well planned pre-emptive measures.
“We have to address the factors that influence the recurrent drought. The Federal and State governments should jointly address this problem so as to prosper and completely improve the lives of our people,” Farey underlined.
Last Month, the UN’s Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, Peter de Clercq who visited Garowe has commended the regional state of Puntland for its efforts to reduce the effect of the drought that hit most parts of the region.
“I praise the marvellous job done by the government towards drought relief and recovery efforts, at the same time, we talked with Puntland leaders the remaining challenges because we are not out of the woods yet by any stretch of the imagination,” said de Clercq who held meeting with Puntland leader, Abdiweli Ali Gas.
Last year, Somali government in collaboration with its international partners averted the drought-related famine despite several regions being hit by the drought, according to UN report.
