At least 7 people mostly children are reported dead after the outbreak of diseases in some parts of Gedo region, officials confirm.
Cholera and measles outbreak in Elwak district and surrounding areas are reported to have spread in alarming rate the last few weeks.
The deputy district commissioner of Gedo region, Sahal Moalim Aden told the local media that the spread of the disease have doubled the last five days adding that the hospitals in the area have no enough medicine to contain the outbreak of the diseases.
The worst affected areas by the outbreak are Elwak, Geriley,Busar, Aws Quran and Garsaala village in Gedo region.
According to Sahal, the spread of the diseases is attributed to the floods of River Jubba that has affected some parts of Gedo region.
“The spread of these diseases is due to the recent floods that have affected Elwak district and surrounding areas, the situation is worsening day after and there are no medicines in the area. Seven people died and there is fear that the number might increase” Sahal said.
He called on Jubbaland administration and humanitarian agencies and health partners to respond to the outbreak and implement preventative measures to contain the diseases in the area.
