Diarrhea outbreak has killed five people and over four others suffering from the disease were admitted to Jowhar hospital for treatment, health officials confirmed.
The director of Jowhar hospital, Abdirahman Ali Abdirahman who confirmed the deaths said the number of patients coming from the villages around Jowhar town seems to be increasing.
The outbreak of the disease is attributed to the water shortages that hit the region after River Shabelle dried up.
“The first two months of the year, many patients were admitted but his month things are different, we received only six people,” Abdirahman said
“Between 12th and 28th January, we received 155 patients, in February 62 others were admitted to the hospital, during period the disease has claimed the lives of five people. Four patients were discharged and 33 other are recuperating from the disease.” he added.
Several other people are believed to have died in the remote villages.
Last month, three other people have reportedly died from a diarrhea outbreak as ten others were affected by the disease.
Three died in Far-Libah village which lies 45km away from Beledweyne.
Far-Libah chief, Jamal Ali Abdule said the diarrhea outbreak was caused lack of clean water in the area saying people in the area consumed contaminated water.
He called on Hirshabelle and federal to help the village as they have no food and water
