Well organised forum to discuss on the safety of Somali Journalists on Saturday kicked off in Mogadishu.
The meeting which was organized by Somali government with the support of UNESCO has convened delegates from the federal government, officials from the regional states as well as journalists.
The conference seeks to prescribe a response mechanism to the unpunished crimes the journalists face especially in Somalia.
The two-day meeting will mobilize comparative competences of both state and non- state media stakeholders in a dialogue process towards a multi-stakeholders dialogue forum for safety of Journalists.
The meeting also discusses how the existing state and non-state initiatives for protection of journalists can be strengthened, coordinated and harmonized and how such initiatives can support the implementation of the Federal Government of Somalia Media Strategy by improving media security as one of the key strategic priorities.
Speaking at the meeting, Somali Deputy Information Minister, Abdirahman Yonis has termed the meeting as crucial.
Yonis lauded the attendees for their commitment to seek durable solution for the challenges that face the journalist.
Mogadishu Mayor, Abdirahman Omar Osman has pledged support for the journalists.
Among the leaders who attended the meeting are Deputy prime minister, Mahdi Mohamed Gulled and leaders of journalists watchdogs.
According to UNESCO, in a period of ten years between 2006-2016, 56 journalists have been killed.
At the end of the meeting, over 50 delegates from the Federal Government, Puntland, Southwest, Galmudug, Hirshabelle states and Banadir region are expected to launch Somalia Multi-stateholder Dialogue Forum for Safety of Journalists as a coordination platform to comprehensively adressi the safety of Journalists concerns in Somalia.
