NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – Fifty-five people have been killed and over ten others sustained injuries when the bus they were travelling in overturned Thursday morning in Western Kenya.
The police initially reported deaths of 42 but the death toll rose to 55 after 13 passengers succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, according to Kenyan officials.
Kenya’s Police Chief Joseph Boinnet said the 55 commuters died after a bus, belonging to Western Express Sacco, crashed in Kericho county.
The grisly accident took place Tunnel area on Londiani-Muhuroni Road.
“It is unfortunate that we have lost 55 people,” Boinnet told local radio.
The police said the 67-seater commuter from Nairobi to Western Kenya veered off a flyover while descending a steep slope and rolled several times after hitting a guardrail.
Kericho County Police Commander James Mogera who spoke to the media said the casualties could rise since more people are still trapped in the wreckage.
“The cause of the accident is still not clear as rescue efforts continue in the area,” said Mugera.
The police said the injured were ferried to Fort Ternan dispensary and Muhoroni Sub County Hospital for treatment.
Among those who died following the crash are eight children below five.
