The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called on Jubbaland state to release a local journalist who was reportedly arrested this week while interviewing members of public about president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s first anniversary in office.
Local media reported that Sabir Abdulkadir Warsame, who works for privately owned Somali Cable TV was detained on Thursday,8th February 2018 by Jubbaland Forces in Kismayo.
The press watchdog urged the Somali authorities to immediately release the journalist.
“Arresting and detaining Sabir Abdulkadir for simply doing his job as a journalist is outrageous. He should be released immediately without condition and be allowed freely continue reporting in the public interest,” Angela Quintal, CPJ Africa program coordinator said.
It has been reported that the arrest of Warsame came after he unintentionally filmed a vehicle carrying charcoal during shooting the interviews, according to CPJ.
Jubbaland Information minister, Abdinur Ali Adan on Friday told CPJ that the journalist was in “safe hands” and would be arraigned in court.
Adan did not give more information about the court proceedings.
