Officials from Parliamentary Constitutional Review Committee have held discussion with members of Southwest state Assembly and ministers of the state on the constitutional review process which has been underway in recent years.
Several officials from Somali Federal ministry for Constitutional Affairs, both the parliamentary Oversight Committee (OC) and Independent Constitutional Review and Implementation Commission (ICRIC) who have been in a duty tour to Baidoa held discussions with the executive and legislative departments of Southwest state.
The meeting was opened by the acting President of Southwest state, Hassan Mohamed Hussein who appreciated the work of the both Parliamentary committees of constitutional Review.
Hussein pledged to cooperate and work with the commission over the process to review the Provisional Constitution of Somalia.
“We are ready to work with the commission tasked for the constitutional review process and give them support they require from our side,” said Hussein.
For his part, the deputy minister of Constitutional Affairs, Hussein Abdi Elmi has called for cooperation and support for the process of the reviewing the constitution.
“I share with you that the constitutional review process needs consultations, therefore, as Southwest state, after we conclude the deliberations with the public, we are going to hold conference where we will launch the process. We will invite different sectors of the civil society,” said Elmi.
The officials spearheading the constitutional review process also met with Southwest parliamentary committee led by 2nd deputy speaker of Southwest Assembly.
Somali ministry of constitutional affairs seeks to review and complete the constitution which was adopted on August 1, 2012 by the National assembly.
It provides the legal foundation for the existence of the Federal Republic and is the source of the country’s legal authority, which sets out the rights and duties of its citizens and defines the structure of government.
