MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least two people have been killed and over 14 others injured after a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle outside the compound of a district headquarters in Somalia’s capital.
Police officers say suspected Al-Shabaab suicide bomber detonate the vehicle near the gate of Howlwadag district headquarters after the security attempted to stop him.
“A suicide car bomb rammed into the district office of Howlwadaag in Mogadishu. It is too early to know casualties,” a police officer, Abdullahi Hussein told Reuters.
Witnesses on scene confirmed the death of two people including the attacker.
Officials and ambulance services said the wounded are mostly young students at a nearby Islamic school.
The explosion destroyed buildings including houses and a school opposite the office.
Al-Shabaab claimed the responsibility for the attack which shattered a period of calm in seaside Mogadishu.
“The mujahideen stormed Howlwadag district headquarters with suicide bomb, there are casualties on the infidels,” reads a statement posted on Al-Shabaab affiliate online media.
