MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali forces on Wednesday recaptured a town in the Lower Shabelle region as the military intensified attacks against al-Shabaab.
Operations to liberate villages conducted by Somali forces have been ongoing since last month.
The forces launched a major offensive against Al-Shabaab, capturing Bariire town in Lower Shabelle region.
In a statement, Somali Ministry for Information confirmed the recapture of the town saying Somali forces conducted a morning raid and captured Barire town
“Government forces have captured the strategic town of Bariire, Lower Shabelle region from the Alshabab terrorist group as SNA forces to continue eliminating terrorists in Lower Shabelle province,” stated the ministry.
Somali military has reportedly attacked the town from different directions prompting a gun battle between the sides.
According to witnesses, al-Shabaab vacated the town after its fighters were overpowered by Somali military.
The casualties of the battle are yet unknown.
