NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – At least four people have been killed and several injured after a passenger bus they were traveling on, was hit by a bomb planted on Fino-Arabia road in Mandera county.
According to Kenya police, the incident happened early this morning when the bus was heading to Mandera Town from Lafey ran on an Improvised Explosive Devise. Police said they fear the number of casualties will increase.
Photos taken from the incident showed the injured on the ground with the bus roof ripped off and windows shuttered by the impact of the improvised explosive device (IED).
Those injured are receiving treatment from the Mandera County Referral Hospital.
The incident comes a day after Kenya forces repulsed an attempt by al-Shabaab militants to attack a police camp in Lafey sub-county.
A local police officer who sought anonymity told the local media that heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters stormed a police camp at Sheikh Barrow locality in Lafey sub-county, prompting fierce gunfire which lasted for more than 15 minutes.
North Eastern regional police boss Rono Bunei who also spoke to the media lauded the bravery of soldiers, saying the security agents have been on alert following reports of a planned attack by the militants in the area.
Mandera county areas had been under al-Shabaab attacks since 2011 when Kenya deployed its troops to Somalia to fight against al-Shabaab.
The group’s fighters target non-locals and civil servants in the county, forcing hundreds of non-local doctors, teachers and government workers to flee the region.
