KISMAYO (Halbeeg) – Al-Shabaab fighters attacked a military base near Somalia’s southern port city of Kismayu early on Monday, a Somali army officer said, adding that he did not immediately have details of any casualties.
Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack on the military base in Bar-Sanguni town and said 27 Somali soldiers had been killed in the incident.
“We first attacked the base with a suicide car bomb and then stormed. We killed 27 soldiers and took the base. Some soldiers fled into the jungles,” Abdiasis Abu Musab, Al-Shabaab’s military operation spokesman said.
There was no immediate comment from Somali government official on the attack.
Al-Shabaab fights to topple Somalia’s central government and impose its own administration.
The base which lies some 50 km (31 miles) away from the port city of Kismayu is jointly operated by the Somali national army and forces from Jubbaland region of southern Somalia.
