MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Passenger flights to and from Ugaas Khalif Airport in Beletweyne of Hiiraan region will not be allowed, the immediate regional Ali Jeyte said Sunday.
Jeyte, who was recently fired by Hirshabelle state, Ali Gudlawe, vowed to take action against civilian planes landing at the airstrip without the permission of his administration.
The announcement came hours after Jeyte was elected as the interim president of the self-declared regional Hiraan State following a meeting held today in Baledweyne town.
Jeyte said that he would represent the people of the Hiraan state “region” in order to address their concerns.
“We are bringing together all the communities of Hiran to build their administration. Every day, Hiran is not represented well, but I will do my best to represent the state and kick out al-Shabaab from all our territories,” Jeyte said.
The renegade leader was spearheading the operations against al-Shabaab fighters last year.
Under his leadership, Somali forces backed by clan militias successfully liberated towns and villages in the region.
