BELEDWEYN (Halbeeg News) – Safiyo Hassan Sheikh Ali was appointed as the new mayor of the riverside city of Beledweyne on Monday.
She will replace Khadar Hassan Afrax who was in the position before.
Appointment made by the Hirshabelle regional state Interior Minister, Mohamed Ali Cadle will make Safiya Hassan as the first female mayor of the agricultural rich southern city in what is seen as a cultural break from male-dominated Somali politics.
She previously served as the district commissioner for Shibis district in Mogadishu.
The historic appointment comes as a delegation led by Hirshabelle leader, Mohamed Abdi Ware is touring Hiiran region.
