The administration of Beledweyne town on Sunday said it was carrying out plans to avert further floods as River Shabelle is about to burst its banks.
Mohamed Osman Abdi Qalafow, Beledweyne district commissioner who spoke to the media said his administration will put in place plans and measures to prevent the recurrence of the flood disaster.
Qalafow noted that they were cooperating with humanitarian agencies to work on a process to avert the flooding of the river.
“Our administration together with Hiiraan regional authorities is committed to come up with plans to prevent imminent floods. We also discussed this issue with NGOs on means to help and rescue the locals,” the DC said.
Meanwhile, dozens of families living in several suburbs of the town are fleeing and looking for higher grounds following fears of floods.
This week, several families living along River Shabelle in Jowhar town were displaced after the river flooded following heavy downpour.
It is common in the regions where the river run through, to witness floods when the river is filled to the brim with frenzied heavy flushing water.
River Shabelle which is 1130 km long flows from Ethiopia and runs through Hiran, Middle and Lower Shabelle regions.
