MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) on Tuesday announced that its forces backed by Somali troops retrieved some of weapons looted from their base in Bula Marer town after al-Shabaab attack.
Last Thursday, heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters stormed a base manned by Ugandan soldiers working under the framework of Atmis.
Al-Shabaab claimed to have taken control of the base and killed over 120 soldiers.
The group also claimed to seized cache of weapons and military vehicles including ambulances and tanks.
According to website linked to al-Shabaab, dozens of Ugandan soldiers were captured alive during the attack.
In a statement, Atmis said its troops successfully pursued the fleeing Al-Shabaab terrorists involved in the ATMIS FOB attack in Buulo Mareer.
“A substantial number of the terrorists have been eliminated. The joint force has also retrieved multiple weapons looted from the FOB,” the statement said.
ATMIS said it remained committed to fighting terrorism and will continue working closely with the Federal Government of Somalia, Federal Member States, and international partners to secure Somalia.
