MOGADISHU ( Halbeeg News) – Several world organizations on Monday congratulated Somalia as it marked 59 years of independence.
African Union (AU) extended congratulations to Somalis on the country’s Independence.
Deputy chairperson of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), Simon Mulongo has wished Somalia peace and prosperity.
“Sending warm wishes and congratulations to my Somali brothers and sisters on the important occasions of the 59th of their Independence day,” Simon said in a Twitter post.
Nicholas Berlanga, European Union envoy to Somalia has sent a message, stating: ”
Congratulations on the 59th Anniversary of Somalia Independence Day. My best wishes for unity, peace and prosperity of all Somali citizens. This is a day to put the general interest of the country above any other consideration.”
The envoy said EU is proud to be Somalia’s partner.
President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo presided over the celebrations at held on Sunday night in Somali capital, Mogadishu.
The Somali National Army (SNA) mounted a guard of honour while a popular music group, the Waberi, provided the entertainment.
The former Italian colony attained its independence on July 1, 1960 and on the same day merged with the former British Somaliland Protectorate, which had obtained independence five days earlier on June 26.
