African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) called on Somali Lawmakers resolve their differences in peaceful manner.
In a statement, AU Special Representative to Somalia, Francisco Madeira has expressed concern over the current political crisis following Wednesday’s stand-off which culminated in political tension that shook the country.
“The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) is deeply concerned with the security implications of Wednesday’s development in Parliament. I appeal to the members of Parliament, legitimate representatives of the people of Somalia, to continue to exercise restraint as they strive to resolve the differences that oppose them,” reads the statement.
The Mission pledged to stand by Somali people and help the country in peace rebuilding process.
AMISOM affirmed that it will operate in Somalia till the nation bounces back on its feet despite the resolution by UN Security Council in 2017 which directs AU to withdraw its troops from Somalia by the 2020.
“At no time, we will unilaterally abandon the friendly people of Somalia and We will, as we have so far done, stand by them at all times until they tell us they are ready to take over from us. Until then, we will continue to support the Somali National Security Forces as they strive to ensure the safety and security of their country and its institutions, including the parliament,” the Mission pledged.
AMISOM refuted reports claiming its forces took full charge of the Lower House building.
“The African Union Commission and AMISOM respect the sovereignty of the people of Somalia and recognizes their rights and have full confidence in the capacity of its leadership to addresses the challenges,” saying, “AMISOM will, therefore, not take control of the House of the People unless the competent Somali authorities request it to do so in full respect and within the parameters of AMISOM mandate.”
