MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – African Union (AU) called for calm in Southwest State barely two days after over ten people were killed in violence in Baidoa town.
In a statement, AU Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for Somalia (SRCC), Francisco Madeira said he has been following closely the events in the Southwest State of Somalia that culminated in the arrest of Mukhtar Robow.
“I wish to call upon all parties to exercise the utmost restraint in resolving the issues related to the current situation in the country and the upcoming elections in the Southwest State of Somalia,” said Madeira.
The envoy said AMISOM will continue to recognize and respect the sovereignty of the people and the government of Somalia and reiterates its resolve to remain impartial in the implementation of its mandate in the country.
Madeira said AMISOM had not taken part in the arrest of Mr. Robow and his subsequent transfer to Mogadishu.
“AMISOM will continue to execute its mandate in close cooperation with the people and the government of Somalia, with maximum respect for their laws, their culture, and their values,” stated Madeira.
The envoy extended condolences to the families who lost their dear ones in the violence.
“We are saddened by the loss of lives in Baidoa and send our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the quick recovery of those who sustained injuries,” he added.
Somali Authorities arrested Mukhtar Robow on Thursday, accusing him of bringing armed forces and weapons back to Baidoa, the interim capital of Southwest state where he is running for president.
Angered by his arrest, Robow’s supporters clashed with the police in Baidoa town.
