African Union has appealed all AU member states and partners to urgently extend humanitarian support to Somali people as the country is faces humanitarian crisis.
Following the conclusion of AU’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) 769 meeting, the AU expressed deep concern over the long running humanitarian crisis in Somalia.
The flooding of River Shabelle has caused destruction, displacement and untold suffering to the people.
United Nations has estimated the number of the victims affected by the torrential rains and subsequent floods of River Shabelle ot over 150000 people.
According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the current floods are some of the worst the region has ever seen.
“The internally displaced people remain the most vulnerable to the impact of the flooding with many camps located in Low-lying areas,” said the spokesperson for the UN Secretary General, Stéphen Dujarric, “humanitarian partners on the ground have prioritized water, sanitation, hygiene (health), shelter and food response in their interventions.”
