Durban (Halbeeg)- Unidentified gunmen on Monday night killed a Somali national in Durban town of South Africa, the latest attack against Somali community in South Africa.
Reports say the gunmen broke into a Somali owned shop and shot dead the owner before making away with valuable things.
Nut Ali, a Somali trader who confirmed the incident said the men who executed the heist confronted with the owner and finally killed him on the spot.
The victim was identified as Sheikh Hussein, according to Ali.
Sheikh Hussein was a young man, we have been living together for years in this country but he was killed by armed men last night,” Ali said.
The police arrived at the crime scene of the crime and launched an investigation into the incident.
“Hours after the robbery incident took place, the police arrived the place and started an investigation,” Ali noted.
The attack comes barely a week after another Somali businessman identified as Abdullahi Mohamed Mohamed killed in a heinous attack after unidentified gunmen stormed a Somali-owned shop in cape town, a port city on South Africa’s Southwest coast.
The renewed attacks are reminiscent of January xenophobic attacks carried out by armed men from the hosting community in the country.
Early this year, Amnesty International accused the South African government of lacking the political will to avert xenophobic attacks.
“There is a lack of political will on the part of the government to deal with issues of violence and xenophobia in a sustainable way,” said Shenilla Mohamed, Executive Director of Amnesty International South Africa, “and the consequence of this inertia has resulted in continuing sporadic bursts of violence which often end in deaths, injuries and damage to property.”
