The African Union Mission in Somalia ( AMISOM) has resolved to work closely Southwest regional state to improve security in Lower Shabelle region, Somali official said Wednesday.
The region which is known to be bread basket of Somalia has witnessed security lapse following attacks by Al-shabab.
The officials of the continental troops have held talks with Shariif Hassan Adan, the President of South West state who on Wednesday visited Barawe, according to the governor of Lower Shabelle region, Ibrahim Ali Adan.
Adan said the President and AMISOM officials discussed on the security issues of the region and the operations against Alshabab.
“President of Southwest state, Shariif Hassan Sheikh who was accompanied by other officials has held talks with AMISOM officials in Barawe. The sides focused on the collaborations between them and the improvement of the security of the region,” Adan noted.
Calls to move to Barawe
The President also met with the local administration officials and elders over the plans to move his government to Barawe town which is the designated capital of Southwest state.
President Adan’s visit comes barely two month after Somali prime minister, Hassan Ali Kheire visited port town in November last year for the first time since he assumed office.
Kheire who had pledged support for Southwest government called on president Adan to relocate his administration in the coastal town.
Barawe town which is located some 179km (111 miles) South of Somali capital had been Alshabab stronghold and was a supply route for food and weapons for the group before Somali forces backed by forces flushed out the group’s fighters from the town in 2014.
Southwest administration is currently based in Baidoa town, 240km South-west of Mogadishu as an interim capital.
