African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) on Saturday dismissed the reports claiming that its forces took over the security of the parliament.
Col. Wilson Rono, the spokesperson of the Mission who spoke to the media termed the speculations unfounded and misconceptions.
Rono said it was part of AMISOM mandate to provide security to Somali government premises since the Mission was deployed in Somalia in 2007.
“We have been providing security to the government installation, It is part of our mandate, so these are false reports and misconceptions,” said Rono.
He said the troops of the Mission are currently working with the security forces at the parliament.
The remarks of the spokesman came amid some of the local media were circulating reports that the security of the House was taken over by the continental troops.
Chief of Somali police, Bashir Abdi Mohamed who was also refuted that the parliament was forcibly taken over said that the security agencies have been deployed to the parliament to secure the building and the provide security to the members of the parliament.
There had been political crisis within the lawmakers since Wednesday when over 100 parliamentarians lodged a motion against the Speaker, whom they accused him of violating the Provisional Constitution and suppressing the opinion of the lawmaker.
