African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) on Sunday said it is investigating Friday’s incident that claimed the lives of a Somali soldier and two civilians in Mogadishu.
In a statement, the mission confirmed the brief clashes between Somali security forces and its troops saying its quick reaction forces and NISA soldiers clashed while AU troops injured were rushed to AMISOM Level II Hospital.
“The AMISOM Quick Reaction Forces were involved in an incident at NISA checkpoint near KM4. The incident is under investigation by both the federal government of Somalia and AMISOM,” the statement reads in part.
The episode occurred after a convoy AU approached NISA checkpoint and attempted to force their fleet through the checkpoint which prompted gunfight.
In its statement, the mission also condemned yesterday’s twin bomb blasts in Mogadishu saying AU will continue to stand in solidarity with the government and people of Somalia in the fight against Al-shabab.
“I present my deepest condolences to the families of the victims of these senseless attacks, which was aimed at creating terror among the population. AMISOM strongly condemns this attack and reiterates its resolve to continue working with Somali National Security forces to free Somalia from violent and terrorism” said the statement.
Two vehicles loaded with explosives on Friday evening detonated near kilometer zero and prompted gunfire between the attackers and the security forces.
The attacks which were claimed by Al-shabab killed over 25 people, according to the medics.
