BARDERE (Halbeeg News) – Ethiopian forces in southern Somalia have repelled al-Shabaab attack on their base on Friday evening, locals confirmed.
Heavily armed militants have stormed a military base in Bardere town manned by Ethiopian forces under the framework of AMISOM.
Locals in the town reported heavy clashes between forces and al-Shabaab fighters, which last for about an hour.
The Ethiopian forces reportedly managed to push back the militants and maintained the control of the base located near the town’s airstrip.
It is not yet clear the casualties of th clashes as AMISOM has not commented on the attack on its base in Gedo region.
Ethiopian forces have been working under emblem of AMISOM for the last six years.
Their contingents operate in Hiiraan, Gedo, Bay, and Bakool region.
African Union had sent troops to Somalia in 2007 to support Somali government to defeat militants in the horn of Africa nation.
Since the first deployment of AMISOM troop in the country, Somalia managed to large swath territories after defeating al-Shabaab fighters.
Al-Shabaab now controls remote areas in south and central Somalia.
