BELEDWEYNE ( HALBEEG NEWS) – The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) contingents from Djibouti and Ethiopia donated non-food items to help internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by the floods of river Shabelle in Beledweyne district and its suburbs in Hiran region on Tuesday.
The package which includes blankets, polythene sheets, basins, and mosquito nets, among other items, was handed over by AMISOM sector four CIMIC officer, LT. Ibrahim Yusuf Ahmed.
Hirshabelle State Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Mohamed Ahmed Abdi received the items donated by AMISOM. The deputy governor of the Hiran region in charge of Social Services, Sheikh Hussein Osman, and other officials was also in attendance during the event.
AMISOM sector four CIMIC officer, LT. Ibrahim Yusuf Ahmed said the peacekeepers will continue providing support to residents through local administration during these critical moments to avert climate change-related challenges.
“Today, we delivered non-food items from AMISOM sector four contingents from Djibouti and Ethiopia to the IDP camps in Hawatako in Beledweyne district following the floods. The items which we handed over to the district officials for distribution include 800 tents,1000 blankets, 800 utensils, and 800 plastic washbasins” Lt. Ibrahim said.
“As mandated AMISOM sector four the contingent will closely cooperate with both district regional administrations in Hiran while also coordinating with community groups including women and youth during emergency situations such as floods.” He added.
Hirshabelle State Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Mohamed Ahmed Abdi who received the package on behalf of his administration, said the donation will go a long way in improving the lives of the IDPs grappling with recurrent impacts of floods saying the items will be used to shelter the displaced families from the harsh weather and protect their children from diseases like malaria and pneumonia.
“I am very glad that this distribution came at the right time when there is a fear of floods of river Shabelle and the IDPs have an urgent need. This will help to address in advance the effects of floods instead of acting after the floods so that they make use of these items timely.”
