MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Despite losing fighters and ground, Al-Shabaab in Somalia still remain “a potent threat” to US and world peace, US military said Tuesday.
US military mission in Africa known as command conducted a total of six airstrikes since the new year began.
US Air Force Col. Chris Karns said Al-Shabaab remains a threat to the U.S. and a dangerous enemy.
“While al-Shabaab is unable to attack the U.S. homeland today, their ambition to do so in the future remains,” Karns.
Karns said US military conducted more than 200 airstrikes against al-Shabaab in Somalia.
During the attacks against against killed many fighters among them the group’s leaders.
“The attacks also disrupted their ability to plan and carry out attacks prevent movement and communications, and impacted their ability to create safe havens,” Karns said.
He added that U.S. airstrikes have also prevented the terrorist organization from conducting operations outside Somalia’s borders
“Al-Shabab is an affiliate of al-Qaida and the group’s “largest and most kinetically active branch,” Karns told Military Times.
US government has completed withdrawal of its troops from Somalia this month.
The move was criticised by many with some experts warned that the withdrawal of an estimated 700 U.S. military personnel saying it came at the worst possible time for Somalia, as al-shabaab group improves its bomb-making skills and continues to attack military and civilian targets even in the capital, Mogadishu.
