At least five soldiers have been killed after Al-Shabab fighters ambushed Somali military convoy at Il-baq locality which lies about 10km north of Bal’ad town of Middlae Shabelle region.
One of SNA vehicles was destroyed after Al-shabab fighters reportedly hit the vehicle with Rocket Propeller Grenade (RPG).
Two other soldiers including the lieutenant of the platoon were injured.
According to source, the convoy was heading to Somali capital, Mogadishu during the attack.
Since February, Al-Shabab fighters have stepped up their attacks against the allied forces in Middle Shabelle region.
Over five Burundi soldiers under the framework of AMISOM were killed and several armoured vehicles were destroyed near Bal’ad town last month after heavily armed Al-Shabab fighters ambushed AU convoy.
The government of Burundi which confirmed the death of its soldiers said its forces repulsed the attack.
In same day, the group has briefly seized Bal’ad town which lies 30km North of Mogadishu without resistance.
The fighters later voluntarily pulled out before reinforcements sent by Somali and AMISOM reached the town.
Al-Shabab fighters has been carrying out ambushes and guerrilla attacks against SNA and AMISOM forces.
